How to log in to Google using your CAVA issued account
First off, many computers are already logged into Google in some way and will not let you log in twice without logging out. To get around this you will need to either log out of your current Google (Gmail) account, or open a private browser window. Here's how to do that:
Log out of Google
Click the icon on the top right of your browser window to reveal this page:
Click "Add another account" or click Sign Out and log back in with your CAVA ID.
OR
Open a private browser window
Right-click on the icon in the bottom toolbar on your computer and select "New Incognito window."
Now go to google.com and log in with your . . .
CAVA issued Google account login
Username = student ID number followed by @californiava.org
Password = student's first and last initials (all caps) followed by their birthdate (with no zeros at the beginning of the month or day)
Example
Student: John Max-Power, Student ID 123456, Birthday 08-06-2012
Username: 123456@californiava.org
Password: JM862012
*Please note that this is not a Gmail account. You will use this account for Google Classroom, Google Sheets, and to gain access to class recordings. You cannot send/receive email from it.
**Additionally, this tutorial was designed for people using the Chrome web browser (recommended). If you are using a different browser, the steps to log out and/or open a private browser may be different.
Can I retake my History Quiz?
Here is a very long and detailed answer to that question:
Most of the courses at CAVA have varying questions that make up your
quizzes. For example in Math you could get asked one of the following
questions, depending on the computer algorithm:
"What is the area of a rectangle that is 6 feet wide and 5 feet
tall?"
or
"What is the area of a rectangle that is 8 feet wide and 4 feet
tall?"
or
"What is the area of a rectangle that is 7 feet wide and 9 feet
tall?"
These are testing the same concept, but each one has a unique answer. When
you retake the exam, the computer randomly assigns you a mix of different
questions, each requiring their own unique answer.
History Quizzes (and some Part 1 Unit Tests) are the exception to this rule. In these courses, the quizzes have one
question option and one answer for each topic you are being tested on.
Therefore if you retook the quiz shortly after failing you would be able
to simply type in the answers that were just shown to you when you received
your results. You can imagine the complications that would come if I allow
everyone to retake all of History their quizzes.
To work around this I am providing students with two options:
1. I will open tests for a one-time retake 48 hours or more after the original
test was taken. This gives you time to study what you missed and forget the
answers that were given to you. If you would like me to open the quiz simply
email me and I will open it if enough time has passed. I will not reply to your
email unless you specifically ask me a question (otherwise I would be answering
emails all day).
2. You can boost your grade by demonstrating mastery of the
subject. Let's say for example you take a quiz on the Egyptian Pyramids and
fail both times. I will give you the opportunity to study and learn about
ancient Egypt and then we can have a 5 minute Zoom session where I ask you a
variety of questions to see if you understand the key concepts of the unit. If
I am convinced that you have learned the subject and have mastered
what you need to know, I will boost your grade accordingly.
I realize that this is a very long answer to a very short question, but it's
a tricky one!
How To Clear Your Cache & Cookies
Hi 6th Graders! ๐

Here’s how to do it:
- Open your web browser (Chrome works best).
- Click the three dots (⋮) in the top right corner.
- Go to Settings ⚙️.
- Find Privacy and Security.
- Click Clear browsing data.
- Check ✅ Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
- Choose All time for the time range.
- Click Clear data.
That’s it! Your lessons should load much smoother now. ๐

Welcome letter from Mr. Sims (PLEASE READ)
My name is Ryan Sims and I am excited to welcome you to my class for the 2025-2026 school year at California Virtual Academy (CAVA). I will begin calling families soon, and I look forward to connecting with each of you.
Learning Coaches can reach me at by email at rsims@caliva.org, or by phone at (951) 236-8248 from 8:30 AM–4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Please add my name, email address, and phone number to your phone/contacts as soon as possible, so my emails and calls come through.
Your first day of school is Thursday, August 16th and we will have a homeroom/orientation session at 8:45 am. Learning Coaches are encouraged to join us for this first session if possible.
Your Independent Study Master Agreement (ISMA) will be sent to you soon from CAVAnoreply@spsis.com (not my school email). It may go to your junk box. It is important that this ISMA is signed and returned as soon as possible. Failure to do so before live classes start can result in being withdrawn from this school. Be sure to type the same name shown on the ISMA and sign with both your first and last name, or it will need to be re-done.
So, what should you be doing now?
2. Make sure you have a working camera and microphone. Students are required to be on camera with a working microphone during all live classes.
5. Purchase the following supplies. *Please note that links are just for reference/convenience. You should be able to buy these supplies at a dollar store on the cheap. (I'm sure Jeff Bezos will be fine without more of your money.)
- 4 spiral notebooks: (1 for Math, 1 for ELA, 1 for Science, 1 for History)
- 4, 2-pocket folders
- Student planner book (or print blank calendar pages to use)
- Highlighters
- Pencils with erasers
- Ruler pack
- Printer paper and ink (provided by CAVA)
- Headset with microphone (optional, but a great idea if your workspace is loud)
I am looking forward to working with you this year. We will be meeting soon, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Sims
